Keep in mind this directory structure:

domain/subweb/folder/file.

for example

http://64.2.88.6/lab/yourschool/yourfolder/yourfilename.htm

It will help you manage the file system and locate your pages.

Start by connecting to the Internet through your dialup account.

Start FrontPage, then click on:

1. FILE
2. OPEN WEB
3. Enter your domain and subweb

4. Click on OPEN.

The domain in this case is: teachnet-lab.org, the subweb is ps101.  Your subdomain will be different unless you are a teacher from PS101.
5. Enter your user name and password.  Remember that passwords are case sensitive.  Make sure your caps lock is not on when you type your password. Only check save password if you are at your personal computer for which you have exclusive access.

If your username and password don't work contact your web adminitrator.

6. In the FOLDER VIEW you will see the root directory for your subweb consisting of various folders and files that will look something like this example on the left.

FILE & FOLDER TYPES

The red arrow is pointing a folder with an underscore in front (_private).  This is a system folder that contains system files.  Never delete any folders with and underscore in front of them.

The blue arrow is pointing to a folder that contains web pages.  We use a different folder for each user on the system so our pages don't get mixed up.  A protocol for naming folders is first initial+lastname.

The green arrow is pointing to a web page (html file).  This web page happens to be on the root directory.

The black arrow is pointing to an image file.  Image files end with .gif or .jpg.  and have the little silhouette in the icon. the other two image.jpg files with %202 and %203 are irregular and are not viewable on the web.  Rule: always let the computer name the extension for the file.  Leave it at .htm or .html or .jpg or .gif.  Don't try to rename that part of the file name.  The web browser won't be able to load it otherwise.

For the most part, you manage folders and files in the folder view just as you do on your computer.  You can drag and drop files to folders and rename files and folders by right clicking on them and then left clicking on rename.

You create new folders by right clicking on the root address at the top of the list (http://www.teachnet-lab.org/subweb) and then selecting new folder.

To create a sub folder of another folder, right click on the folder in which you want the new folder to exits and click on new folder.

Creating A File FrontPage Editor

The area to the right of the folder list is your editor.  You can think of it as a word processor.  If fact, it has been designed to look and feel just like Microsoft's Word 2000.

Start typing your document and formatting just as you do in Microsoft Word, or other word processors.

Since you are always
