Lesson
Plan #3: The Color Palette:
Color Wheel & Brush Strokes Students will: 1. review the color wheel as they explore the waterlilies of Monet and the sunflowers of van Gogh. 2. explore the Impressionist technique of painting. Time Required: Days 5 & 6. (See timeline) 40-minute periods Vocabulary: Day 5: color, primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, complementary, analogous Day 6: color wheel, hue, value, intensity, monochromatic, warm colors, cool colors - What is color? (what the eye sees when light is reflected off an object) - What are primary colors? (red, yellow, and blue, from which all other colors are made, they are the purest of color) - What are secondary colors? (violet, orange and green, made by mixing the primary colors) - What are tertiary colors? (made by mixing a primary and a secondary color, ex: blue green, red violet) - What are complementary colors? (colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, ex: red and green, yellow and violet, blue and orange) - What are analogous colors? (colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, ex: yellow, yellow-orange, orange) Students will discuss the palettes of Monet and van Gogh used in their paintings and discuss how these color melodies were achieved. Day 6: Students will review the characteristics of the Impressionist movement: short, quick brush strokes, light and brilliant color, fleeting images. Using color palettes, students will explore the Impressionist technique of painting. Teacher asks and demonstrates and students respond to questions: - How would you make an Impressionist blue water? (short, overlapping strokes of blues, white, magenta, & vermilion) - How would you show the warmth of a flower in a van Gogh yellow? (add browns and reds to a rich warm yellow hue) Evaluation: Degree and level of comprehension to teacher posed questions throughout the lesson. 1. What are the three properties of color? (hue, value and intensity) 2. What types of color schemes can artists use to produce interesting and striking results? (monochromatic – values of a single hue, analogous –colors side by side on the color wheel, and warm and cool color schemes – the warmth of the sun colors are red, yellow and orange, the coolness of water colors are blue, green and violet).
