TEACHER NOTES

Introduce the sound and “feel” of The Blues early on through listening material. That way written material will have more meaning. In teaching The Blues, I found that using Moby’s album Play on the Mute Label (Mute, CDSTUMM172) as a listening resource was a good way of bridging the gap between the old and the new. Students are likely to be conscious of Blues characteristics without even being aware of the fact.

A variety of extension activities could be developed for this area. For example students can be encouraged to:

compose a Blues melody, either vocal or instrumental incorporating Blues characteristics such as blue notes, slides, bends, moans and wails.

sequence a walking bass line outlining the 12-bar Blues structure

sequence a keyboard part outlining the 12-bar Blues chord structure.

create an authentic drum pattern based on the sound of early Blues recordings

prepare a PowerPoint  presentation to present their group work

The All Music Web site (http://www.allmusic.com) contains some excellent essays and biographies regarding The Blues. You might like to use these as handouts or as references to other important Blues artists.
