These are some answers that the student must write for their food chain expository.

Plants and animals have an interdependent relationship.
All life depends on the energy from the sun.
Plants are important for all life.
Plants are called producers. They make their own food and they become food for animals.
Animals get their energy from eating plants and other animals.
The animals that get food from plants are called primary consumers. Some examples of these animals would be insects, mice, rabbits, deer, monkeys, and so on.
Animals that eat animals that eat plants are called secondary consumers. Some example of these animals would be snakes, ferrets, and raccoons.
Bigger animals that eat other animals are called top predators such as lions, tigers, vultures, or sharks. Small animals are prey for these top predators.
When animals die decomposers such as insects, bacteria, or mushrooms break their bodies down and become part of the soil which in turn becomes food for the plants.
