Curriculum (Content Area): Art

Grade-Levels 3 - 5

PURPOSE (OBJECTIVE): Students will explore the life and artistic style of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and demonstrate abilities of using technology to create self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo.

DESCRIPTION (SUMMARY OF PLAN): After reading with students the book on Frida Kahlo "I Painted My Own Reality," and view visuals of Kahlo's paintings, students will be able recognize basic characteristics of paintings by the artist. With the use of multimedia technologies, students will create a self-portrait, as well as a group presentation that will include a poem with an expression of their portrait along with music by a Mariachi musician.

1. Students will complete a concept map on the artist using Inspiration software based on the story "I Painted My Own Reality" which will include hyperlinks related to the artist.

2. Students will select two paintings by the artists and will create a ven diagram using Inspiration software to compare and contrast the two.

3. Students will use a digital camera to photograph each other, scanner to scan additional media in order to create a self-portrait that will be manipulated and published using Adobe Photoshop.

1, 3, 5, and 9

4. Students will work in groups of 5 or more to create a PowerPoint presentation of their self-portraits, which will include a poem in Spanish based on their study of poet Elias Nandino and music by Mexican mariachi.

5. Students will present their interactive multimedia slide show to their classmates and then will be evaluated using a critique form rubric.
