Curriculum (Content Area) Language Arts

Grade-Level Span: 3-5

PURPOSE (OBJECTIVE):

The student will compare and contrast two Mexican literature books.

DESCRIPTION

Students will collaborate in groups of five as a team. They will read two books by Mexican authors, one being a Mexican artist.Through the use of the Visual Learning software program Inspiration, they will create maps detailing similarities and differences between the two.They will then analyze and synthesize information to be presented to the rest of the class using a presentation program. A rubric will be used by the students to evaluate each team.
As a cultural/cooking activity, each group will follow a recipe to make flan. They will be evaluated by other staff members who will sample the flan.

The students will read the book I Painted My Own Reality by Frida Kahlo. They will use the Internet to research information about the book.

The students will read the book How Nanita Learned to Make Flan by Campbell Geeslin.  They will use the Internet to research information about the book.

Using the software Program Inspiration, the student will create a Concept map and make a comparison chart of the two books.

Using the software program Inspiration, the students will create an Idea map to convince the other groups of their choice.
