Arthur Meets The President

Objective:
To introduce early childhood students to developmentally appropriate multimedia resources (e.g. interactive books, educational software.)
Overview:
The students in Arthur’s class enter into a contest explaining how can they help make America great. Arthur wins the competition. Then at the president’s request, Arthur, his classmates, teacher and family go meet the him.
Materials required:
A computer with Internet capacity, Kidspiration software, construction paper, glue, scissors , crayons, markers, the book

Procedures:
The activities below are in the teaching style of
Bloom's Taxonomy. This was done to encourage the students to use higher level thinking skills.
Activities:

Knowledge- The students will read the story Arthur Meets The President by Marc Brown. Make a KWL chart about the President and the job responsibilities that he performs. |
Comprehension- The students will develop a short multimedia presentation (using Web Workshop) on life of a president of their choice. |

Application - Have the children to make a diagram of the different responsibilities of a president using Kidspiration software.

Analysis- The students will write a short essay explaining how they can help make America great. This could include: donating toys and clothing no longer used, turning off the lights and water when they are done using them etc. |

Synthesis- The students will create a web page using Web Workshop to shore their stories titled, " If I Were President." |
Technology Connection - |
Extension:
Discuss with the students how laws are passed in our governmental system. Have the students to think of a law that they would like to have passed. Allow them to write and explain it on a poster board with an illustrations. Make a bulletin board display with the completed assignments.
Home Learning:
The students will construct a mobile of important things in the story with labels explaining each of them.
Evaluation:
The students will complete a teacher-made comprehension test.
