Arthur’s Birthday

Grade Level:
First and Second Grade

Time Required:
30 Minutes

Objective:
The students will use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities.

Overview:
Birthday parties are supposed to be lots of fun, but Arthur has a problem. His friend is having her party on the same day. The students in his classroom can’t decide which party to attend.

Materials required:
A computer with Internet capacity, construction paper, crayons, markers, glue, pencils and the book Arthur’s Birthday by Marc Brown

Procedures:
The activities below are in the teaching style of Bloom's Taxonomy. This was done to encourage the students to use higher level thinking skills.

Activities:

Knowledge- Allow the students to orally read the story Arthur’s Birthday by Marc Brown. Have them to make a story map explaining the: setting, characters, problem and solution.

Comprehension- Have each student to pull the name of another student out of a small box and write something special about that person.

Application- Have the students to make a graph of the students birthdays. Display this chart in your classroom for everyone to see and enjoy.

Analysis- The students will design a word search puzzle using words from the story and word search software.

Synthesis- Allow the students to make electronic birthdays card for Arthur and Muffy.

Extension:
Have the students to work in cooperative groups and plan class birthday party for Arthur and Muffy. Ask the parents to provide party favors and treats. Allow the students to write Arthur and Muffy a letter explaining how wonderful the party was.

Home Learning:
Have the children to write about what they learned about sharing from the story.

Evaluation:
Have the students to complete a teacher made comprehension test using teacher's  helper software.
