Miss Nelson Is Missing/Miss Nelson Is Back - Lesson 3
Objective: Students will be able to:
* use simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading including use of multiple meanings, synonyms, antonyms and word relations.
* read text and determine the main idea.
* identify relevant supporting details .
* put the story in sequential order.
Materials:
* Book: Miss Nelson Is Missing by Harry Allard and James Marshall
Miss Nelson Is Back by Harry Allard and James Marshall
* White piece of paper
* Computer with Internet and word processing
* Worksheet (vocabulary)
* Worksheet (sequencing)
* Postcard
Vocabulary: shall, relieved, substitute, ringleaders, corny, nervous, plot, impersonating, misbehave, tottered, amused, demonstrated, consequences, behavior, mention
Working with words: The teacher will review what a statement is and question is. Introduce sentences that give order (put example on the board). Students will do pg. 7 (Part A & B) in language book. Students will go online to Student Fun and complete activities on punctuation.
Activity: The teacher will...
1. review vocabulary and definitions. (teacher gives word/students give definition)
2. have students write prediction of the story based on title and the front cover.
3. read and ask questions as you read. (Miss Nelson Is Back)
4. have the students go online to The Dictionary Plus to find synonyms and antonyms for their vocabulary words.
5. have the students go online to do a vocabulary activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.
6. have the students complete a worksheet on sequencing. (print out the worksheet)
7. share personal summer stuff. Discuss what I did and brainstorm summer activities. Introduce postcard and students will write from one place they visited or did in the summer.
8. if time permits, have the students share their postcard. (summer activities)
Evaluation: The students will work on their personality panorama and answer the following questions:
* How did Miss Nelson's class misbehave while she was away?
* Why do you think some kids "acted up" for the substitute?
* Why were Miss Nelson's kids glad to have her back?
* Did your class ever "act up" for a substitute? What happened?
* Write your ideas about what makes a good substitute.
Home Learning:
* Students will use word processor to type their vocabulary words in a story.
* Students will go online to Discovery Kids to create a crossword puzzle with their vocabulary words.
* Students will go online to do a comprehension activity, print out the worksheet and complete it.
