Lesson 1 – Introduction of the Subject “Animal Life in the Ocean” - (Two Sessions)

 

Objectives:

·        To have students become aware of the rich array of animal life in the ocean.

 

Materials:

·        Literary books related to sea-life/ocean animals such as Scholastic’s “Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor” by Joanne Cole.

·        Videotapes relating to sea-life/ocean animals such as “Manatee Rescue, A Tale of Survival” produced by the Sea World.

·        Tape recorders and chart papers.

 

Procedures:

Session 1 -

·        Introduce the subject – Animal Life in the Ocean.

·        Read aloud a book to introduce students to sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Identify names of sea-life/ocean animals and solicit students input.

·        Make a web and/or list of sea-life/ocean animals mentioned and discussed.  (Students can work in pairs or small groups to develop these listings.  This information will then be compiled into an ongoing source of reference that can be used during this study.)

Session 2 -

·        Review what was learned in the last session about sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Play a video about sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Discuss what students know about sea-life/ocean animals.  (The discussion can take place in small groupings.  Information can be recorded onto chart papers and/or a tape recorder for future use.)

 

  Competency/Evaluation:

·        Students will be able to identify and provide names of sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Students will be able to articulate what they know about sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Students will be able to record their input and outcome of discussion using “pen and paper” and using a tape recorder.
