Lesson 2 – Introduction of the Use of Computer as a Learning Tool in the Sea-Life Study (Two Sessions)

Objectives:

·        To have students use the computer as a research tool in conjunction with literary books and videotapes.

Materials:

·        Literary books and videotapes relating to sea-life/ocean animals.

·        Computer(s) with Internet access.

·        A Projector (to project computer screen images for class presentation of Web-sites.)

Procedures:

Session 1 -

·        Review the sea-life theme by discussing books and videotapes introduced in previous sessions.

·        Introduce the computer as a learning tool by presenting a sea-life related Internet site via a projector.

·        Discuss what students know about computers.

·        Solicit students input and compile a list of basic computer terms such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, screen, hard-drive, software, Internet, etc.

·        Explain the functions of each part of the computer and how each operates.

·        Have the students record what they know and what they feel they need to know about computers.  (Webbing and tape recording can be used to record responses.)

Session 2

·        Review and address student responses from Session 1 concerning what they need to know about computers.

·        Review computer terms introduced in Session 1.

·        Demonstrate basic computer operating skills such as maneuvering the mouse, typing on the keyboard, turning on/off the computer, etc.

·        Students will be grouped according to similar computer-skill needs as recorded in Session 1.

·        Provide hands-on opportunities for students to operate a computer using computer software such as “Learn to Type”.

·        While some students are working on the computers, engage other students by discussing, brainstorming and webbing about how we can use computers in the sea-life study.

Competency/Evaluation:

·        Students will be able to identify parts of a computer and each of their functions.

·        Students will have some basic knowledge and beginning skills to operate a computer.

·        Students will have made connections between conducting the sea-life study and the use of a computer.
