Lesson
2 – Aquarium Site Visits Recorded with A Digital Camera:
(Three Sessions)
Objectives:
To have
students visit local aquariums to observe live ocean animals in captivity.
To have
students learn to use the digital camera.
Materials:
·
Brochures,
pamphlets introducing local aquariums.
·
Digital Camera(s).
·
Computer(s)
with Internet access.
Procedures:
·
Introduce
the aquarium as a place where sea-life/ocean animals can be found and where
rescued animals are rehabilitated to be returned to their natural environment,
the ocean.
·
Discuss and
make a list of what we expect to see in the aquarium.
·
Discuss what
we would like to know and what questions to ask when we visit the aquarium.
·
Explain how
a digital camera is different from a conventional camera and how to use it.
·
Demonstrate
how to download pictures from the digital camera onto the computer.
·
Allow
students to take digital pictures in the class.
·
Bring
questions to ask the aquarium guide/host.
·
Have
students record the answers using pen & paper and/or using a tape recorder.
·
Have
students take digital pictures of sea-life animals at the aquarium.
·
Review and
discuss the answers we received from the aquarium host.
·
Review and
discuss what students learned from the site visit experience.
·
Project on
the big screen digital pictures taken at the aquarium using a projector during
the discussion.
·
Let students
download digital pictures onto folders and/or diskettes for future use in the
study. (Allow students to complete this task at after-school hours if
necessary.)
Competency/Evaluation:
·
Students
will have first-hand live images of many sea animals.
·
Students
will have obtained and recorded some information regarding sea animals from
marine experts in the aquarium.
·
Students
will have the basic skills to use a digital camera.
· Students will have the basic skills to download digital pictures onto the computer.
