Place some perfume and sour milk in separate containers (vials). Explain to the students they will each have a turn "smelling" the contents of each container. Without telling the contents have the students smell both the sour milk and the perfume.

KEY WORDS: Lead class to a discussion on concepts of smell, nose, odor, aroma. pleasant, unpleasant.
Sample Question: Would you like to drink the sour milk?

Activities

Whole Group

There are many picture books readily available in school or public libraries. The following is the one I selected. However, you may find one that you are more comfortable with.

Read the book, Beginning to Learn About Smelling, by Richard L. Allington, and Kathleen Cowles, Illustrated by Rick Thrun, Raintree Childrens Books, 1980.

This is a colorful, 32 paged picture book that is part of a series. There are descriptions of 14 different categories of smells (i.e. holidays, cleanliness, hunger, illness).

Small Group/Center
The paraprofessional had to direct this small group activity. Children were not able to do this independently.

Smell Cups
Fill empty film canisters with different smelling items (i.e. onion, garlic, vinegar, orange, smelly cheese, flower, cinnamon). Allow children to smell each selection and try to identify it. Put these words on the word wall so that they can be used in the next activity.

From the information obtained in groups of 2 or 3 draw pictures or use words from the word web and word wall to complete the table.

Assessment

My students write daily in a journal.
In their writing journals the students respond to the following questions.

How can smelling let us know there might be danger?
